JD and LLM are the most two most popular law degrees in the world and offer students a chance to work as a lawyer anywhere in the world. It should be noted that LLM is an internationally recognized degree that can be studied for anywhere in the world or at least most of the countries. A JD degree can be obtained after education of three years, while a LLM degree can be obtained after studying one year. The LLM can be taken after the LLB or but having an LLM degree is not a must for aspiring lawyers as it just gives them an edge in the competitive job market and adds to their qualification but in some countries it is considered a must too as it provides additional knowledge and understanding of the law field. It has also been noted that in some countries, LLM degree holders found it tough to find the best jobs as it depends in which part of the world they are living and how they want to proceed with their education.

It is possible for students to get an LLM without a law degree but according to many law colleges or universities, you are required to have an undergraduate degree in law to work better in this field. Even if you do have an LLM, there are hardly any countries that allows you to practice law without getting a JD or LLB or anything equivalent to it and passing the Bar exam or Solicitor's exam.
